Intermezzo

Located at 1427 E 10th St Charlotte, NC

Nestled in the heart of Plaza Midwood you will drive past a very unassuming building. A building that has been there for years and to locals, is a staple of the neighborhood. However, to a visitor, we can only guess that you’ve passed by or accidentally overlooked its simple brick exterior, gravel parking lot and busy corner intersection a thousand times.

Appetizer : Ricotta & Goat Cheese Crostini

Are you a fan of goat cheese as much as I am? If so, you know any dish that includes this ingredient on the menu is a ‘must have.’ This appetizer appears to be simple, but I can assure you its flavors and textures are perfectly balanced. There is the rich creaminess of the goat cheese spread paired with a slight burst of lemon peel, all ontop of a crunchy house made bread that leaves your taste buds impressed. …….want to add a little ‘extra’ to this dish? Ask your server for a side of marinara to dip this bread into.

Entree(s) : Grilled Fungi Pizza

Mushrooms, mushrooms and more mushrooms. If you aren’t a lover of fungus then this pizza is not for you. If you are, however, you won’t regret ordering this pie among the many others to choose from. This marina based pizza is covered with four different types of mushrooms yet held together with mozzarella cheese. (Can we just say ‘wow,’ as getting to enjoy one type of ‘shroom is lucky, let alone FOUR). Sprinkled on top is the herb that connects most Italian dishes, basil.

Our secret must have...

Are you one to order a side of ranch your pizza? No judgement here, as you’re in good company. During our very first trip to Intermezzo, we learned ranch doesn’t exist as a side dipping sauce in this restaurant, which as minimal as this sounds, can really ruin your pie eating experience. Not to worry though, our server ensured us he had something better. (Better than ranch?! Yes I know you’re thinking does such a thing exist?) Let me tell you we were blown away.

This small serving bowl of what looks similar to ranch is called ‘creamy feta dip.’ ORDER THIS off menu secret and you will not regret it. This is AMAZING and arguably could be better than ranch (at least in this context ha). God help you if you’re a fellow feta cheese lover, as this will be a menu item you will crave.

Entree(s) : Sarma (Cabbage Rolls)

WOW. This traditional Serbian entree warms your bones and fills your belly. With an interesting appearance, your brain isn’t really sure ‘what’ you’re about to consume. Opposite of the traditional context of rolls as a menu side item, these are soft, juicy, dripping in flavor and a feature that will leave a memorable impression on you (especially if you’re a first timer). Wrapped in an almost a translucent cabbage leaf, these rolls are stuffed and baked with ground beef, rice and onion. As they bake, these leaves serve as small steam ovens, to the ingredients they hold together. The blast of steam allows all of the juices to mix together and cook the ingredients from the inside out. Once you finish these protein packed pillows, don’t forget to dunk the house made bread in the leftover juices below.

Dessert : Tiramisu

A popular Italian favorite. This tiered cake is the perfect dessert to fulfill your sweet tooth after these belly fillers. I am always amazed at the layered aesthetics of Tiramisu, as they appear so complex yet once consumed, you might be pleasantly surprised by its light and somewhat ‘sponge-like’ consistency. With hints of vanilla, Kahlua and coco powder in every bite you won’t regret choosing this staple to complete your Intermezzo dining experience.

The atmosphere

Upon arrival you instantly feel like a member of the neighborhood as you’re greeted with open arms to make yourself comfortable. Whether you enter through the main doors on the side street or from the gravel lot through the covered patio, there is plenty of space to house a large group of friends. Or perhaps you’re looking for something more quiet and intimate, post up in a cozy booth. The attire is equally matched and up to the diners desire (from date night to casual).
