Our Story

Why a Food Blog?

Cooking, eating and talking about food have become a shared passion of ours. It started early on during our dating years while still getting to know one another. We would target a new restaurant each time, order a variety of food, and the shared experiences mapped out our life. We both firmly believe in finding activities to enjoy with your spouse. For us, we are so thankful ours has become the dining experience.

Not only did our palates and appreciation for good food grow but so did our respect for the restaurant.  Surrounding atmosphere and service are integral parts that elevate food itself. We started to realize on our way home we ended up ‘grading’ the encompassing date night experience by ranking favorite restaurants, dishes, spirits and more. Before long our friends and family began reaching to us: trusting us to guide them not only ‘where’ to go, but what to order.

Matt, a former fine dining server has another level of connection when it comes to the service industry. Working at various reputable restaurants around Charlotte he has first hand experiences to call upon. He made lifelong industry friends and learned valuable skills that transfer to everyday life.  Casey, never having worked in restaurants, illuminated a different point of view strictly from the the guest’s perspective.

In 2015 we took a trip to our ‘food Mecca’ in the United States – New York City. We were visiting family members but, as always, we were also eating our way through the city. That day we walked through Manhattan after enjoying two New York staples -Chelsea Market and Eataly. That is where the idea of Fork & Fundy was born. Instead of having to re-share our experience through texting multiple times with eager friends, we shifted and thought it would be a great idea to share our experience on a platform for everyone to enjoy.

‘What makes your food blog so different?’

The generic truth is that WE are different. Honestly speaking, we believe our blog is just the platform. We are beyond fortunate to have such incredible and talented people in our lives. We believe that such talent should be shared which offers unique insight that allows the reader to become more immersed in and connected to the experience. It also offers a platform for family members and friends to share a specific dish that otherwise would have gone unknown.

Let’s face it, if you enjoy any level of cooking, we want you to join the Fork & Fundy community. Let the friendly faces of our support group guide your tastebuds, kitchens, and dinner tables. In fact, we are sure there is a favorite ingredient or dish that comes to the top of your mind and we want to learn more from YOU.

In fact, the three photos above were made by a group of friends just having fun in the kitchen, hosting a ‘family meal’ together.

After the decision to create a food blog were numerous questions:

What do we call it?

The ‘Fork’ is a well known symbol of the dining experience. It is placed at every dinner table and holds the responsibility of transporting each savory bite. ‘Fundy’ is a childhood nickname -a shorthand of our last name Funderburk – that has stayed with Matt since he was a kid. When  ‘Fork & Fundy’ was paired together we instantly fell in love with the alliteration, cadence and sentiment.

What should our logo look like?

We knew a graphic needed to accompany the name. I enlisted the help of a former coworker turned friend (from my aquatic industry days) who is a brilliant graphic designer. Madison Carter (@madrhocarter) at Lazarus Design Team listened to our jumbled thoughts and analyzed our childish doodling to eventually create the perfect logo.

The mirrored capital letter ‘F’s offer a silhouette table shape that centers and grounds the logo. Above, you will find a crown paying tribute to the Queen City – our birth city, home, and the place where our lives and relationships still flourish. As natives we are often referred to as ‘unicorns’ among a sea of now transplants. The three dots that sit on top of the crown stand for the three areas of our blog — ‘Good Food’ (restaurants), ‘For The People’ (recipes) and ‘By The People’ (spotlight). The white, gold and black color variations provide a crisp and clean look to pull it all together.

It has taken years of thought, collaborative effort and a shared passion that has allowed us to bring 'Fork & Fundy' to life. To this day we still enjoy receiving pictures of menus, questions about wine lists, and ‘where to go’ but now, we have created a platform for us to share with everyone. Enjoy!
Now, shoot us a message and let's have some fun!
